A 1970’s Guild T50 just came into the shop on consignment, the original bridge comes with it too! I just gave it a once over, and some new strings, and it’s good to go. Super tidy condition, so clean in fact that I had to check the date again…and again! #tymguitars #guild #guitar #guitartech #vintageguitar #vintage #guitars #guitarshop #repairshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

So small it almost fits in your back pocket! I’ve just finished up repairs on this Coronet short scale bass, and with some flat wound strings, it’s so much fun to play! It needed a fair amount of attention to get the frets levelled out, the nail holes in the fretboard have been sorted out (see previous post from a couple of days back), and all the electronics cleaned up/solder reflowed. My understanding is that this is off to a young lady, about 9 years old, to learn how to play, and I think it’ll make a wonderful companion for years to come. #tymguitars #guitartech #guitarrepair #vintage #shortscale #bass #coronet #madeinjapan #guitar #vintageguitar #repairshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

This is the 3rd Strat that I’ve borrowed from Tim @tymguitars (from his personal collection) in as many weeks, and hands down this is the pick of the bunch. In fact I’m going to go as far as to say, and this is a big one - that it’s the best Strat I’ve ever played. I wish I could tell you a bit more about it, but I’ve got a feeling it may be a collection of Fender parts build (Tim?). The neck is super slim with a wide fretboard, and the body is crazy light! The electronics including the pickups appear to be of Japanese origin and they sound bloody wonderful actually (I could be wrong about the origins, but they do sound so so good). Both body and neck are super worn and showing some real age, the finish on the fretboard has actually chipped off in big chunks, and there’s a fair amount of finish checking and crazing on the body. Honestly there’s more I could ramble on about but really, none of the minor details matter when you have something so incredibly inspiring and enjoyable to go play on! Whatever you are, I like you a lot. #fender #stratocaster #strat #guitar #fenderguitar #guitarist #vintage #tymguitars #guitartech #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother

Post fret level/full setup & service “mandatory” test run through this killer 1971 50watt Fender Bassman. 😉 Good grief what an amp! #tymguitars #guitarepair #guitartech #fender #stratocaster #fenderbassman #supportindependent #guitarshop #repairshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #guitar #strat #vintage #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Restoration complete! This Teisco K-2L landed at my house, from Japan on Friday afternoon, and needed a full refret, and wiring upgrade, it was completely D.O.A, but for a guitar over 40 (close to pushing 50) years old it was otherwise in pretty decent shape. There was no real question about what fretwire to use, Jumbo all the way. Dammit I might have to break ranks and cut a quick demo video of this thing, it is legit so much fun to play. #guitar #gearnerds #guitarrepair #guitarsdaily #luthier #vintageguitar #teisco #japan #mij #guitartech #vintage #brisbane #blackcatboneguitars

One thing with restorations that I learnt a long time ago, is to know when to use restraint. With the rust removed from the tailpiece, and the ring cleaned and gently polished, it’s time to leave the hardware alone. What I’m getting at is, it’s over 80 years old, and there is no reason/it would be foolish, to try and make it look “brand new”. That’s 80+ years of character right there. #restoration #luthier #banjolin #antique #vintage #gearnerds #repair #bluegrass #folk #brisbane #blackcatboneguitars

Salvaged fret markers from a 1930-ish John Grey & Sons “banjolin”. These are super fragile and will need some delicate polishing but will be going into the new fretboard. To remove the old one, I just held it outside and waited for a strong breeze. #macro #mandolin #banjo #banjolin #luthier #restoration #shell #antique #vintage #brisbane #blackcatboneguitars

I found this John Grey & Sons banjolin under my Uncles house about 7 years ago while I was renovating it. All my other jobs are currently in the process of curing or waiting on parts so, thought I’d get a start…7 years later ;) #banjo #mandolin #vintage #stringedthings #repair #wip #bluegrass #luthier #antiques #brisbane #blackcatboneguitars
