Well, there was always going to be something I overlooked here…can’t believe y'all didn’t stop me 😉Basically, a pretty huge oversight was that I failed to take into consideration the fretboard radius (7.25) vs the bridge radius (12!!!) hahahaha… So, I had two options, remove some frets and sand in a compound radius, as it wasn’t too big a deal between 1st and 12th, which would be the responsible thing to do. OR - do the thing that I don’t recommend you out there ever do, and sand that compound radius right onto the frets. Why don’t I recommend it? Well, it’s fine if it’s your guitar, like this is mine, and thankfully these brand new frets were tall enough to take it, but it’s just, it’s pretty lazy, and not something a customer should ever expect. You also run a huge risk of taking off so much fret, that the whole thing becomes a bigger mess than it already was, so - don’t do it. In this instance though, I got lucky and it all worked out, and feels pretty darn okay. I got, very lucky. 🍀#custommistakes #crisisaverted #telecaster #shortscale #guitar #guitartech #ineedanadult #repair #rectify #cursedobjects #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother

I’m a little bit overdue to build something stupid, so…roughing out a plan to rectify that situation asap. I’ve got a MIJ Jaguar neck that I recently did a refret on, a pre routed standard Tele body (thankfully no string through was drilled), a pocket full of idiot ideas, and ain’t nothin’ gonna stop this from happening, not even the very obvious issues here. Nah, it’ll be fine. The wrap around bridge will allow me to get the 24inch scale that’s required, and to deal with the break angle, I’m going to build a solid shim for the neck pocket - guessing about 2mm, we’ll see. I’ll move the bridge pickup towards the neck by a few millimetres so it’s not right on the bridge, then do a massive smugglers route under the pickguard (of which I’ll cut a custom one, using this as a very basic template). Then decide on switching/control options, and a coat of the finest paint that $6.50 can buy. Should be fun!!! P.S please feel free to point out anything huge I might have missed here! #mashup #customguitar #justforfun #guitar #failureisalwaysanoption #telecaster #jaguar #shouldntbeleftalone #beexcellenttoeachother

Thank goodness for test runs, right?!! Ahahahaha. I’ve been seeing some AMAZING gold leaf finishes lately, and I just had to have a go. Well…I mean I’m going to have a go, this was just a run to try a few different methods. This is the result of the crumple and burnish, with egg white as the size (glue). Obviously very messy, but damn good fun. I’ve had a go at a clean less sketchy run on the back of the body and I’m starting to get a feel for it. A few more attempts on test bodies first, then something incredibly daft for, a Jazzmaster perhaps? #failureisalwaysanoption #experiment #telecaster #goldleaf #guitarfinishing #guitar #brisbane #cursedobjects #beexcellenttoeachother

Rebuild complete! Far out, I think it’s just under a year ago that this Charlie Christian style pickup, completely fell apart as I was about to install it. I was majorly bummed out, first the top plate just snapped in half, soon followed by the rest of the pickup just crumbling to bits, even the magnets fell off! @leddinvintageguitars took the rebuild job on a while back and he did an immaculate job of it, it’s essentially been built from scratch. All that was left for me to do, was build a new top plate, which I’d been putting off for a long time. Today was the day, annnnnd it actually went a lot smoother than expected! I made a template out of some clear guard material by first cutting a slot down the centre for the blade, and then with a combination of eyeballing and every now and then measuring, came pretty damn close to the standard design. Then I just glued that, to some 3 ply, shaped and slotted that, pulled the temp of, epoxied it together, and there you have it, ready for something special! #guitarepair #guitartech #tymguitars #leddinvintageguitars #brisbane #guitar #pickups #charliechristian #telecaster #rebuild #repair #fortitudevalley #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Getting reacquainted. This is the first guitar I gave a “made to fade” char finish, which feels like a lifetime ago! It’s actually a Squier body that I stripped, with a ‘52 reissue neck, and a set of Twisted Tele pickups (my favourite #fender set). It’s made to fade, but I’ve hardly had the time to play this thing anywhere near enough so I’d say it’s time to remedy that. #telecaster #madetofade #squier #tele #guitar #guitartech #guitarist #char #yakisugi #customguitar #cursedobjects #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother

‘87 Squier Telecaster, with a freshly loaded 1960’s Dearmond gold foil pickup. @tonyguitarnerd brought this in to be made a little more tour ready, a few days ago. It ended up playing as good as any great Tele I’ve had in my hands, but the previously installed neck humbucker was just too hot, and dominating in middle position. Tony had a dig around in what I can only imagine is the “parts drawers” of dreams and pulled out a vintage gold foil. There was no way I was not making time to load this thing, so after a few minor mods to the freshly cut pickguard, in it went. It (perhaps by a bit of luck) is a perfect match for the bridge pickup, and while it sounds amazing by itself, middle position had me gobsmacked. I’ve never really made use of middle all that much, but in this case, to my ears it was absolutely where it’s at! You might be able to catch it in action when Tony plays with @gentlebenandhisshimmeringhands at Netherworld Arcade this Sunday. Thanks for bringing this one in, and have a rad tour! #telecaster #goldfoil #guitartech #guitarrepair #tymguitars #brisbane #customguitar #squier #guitars #beexcellenttoeachother

I’ll cut a cleaner mounting bracket once its back from tour, but the install of this vintage gold foil for @tonyguitarnerd is done. It sounds so so so good. #guitartech #tymguitars #repairshop #customguitar #goldfoil #telecaster #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Yesterday this Telecaster control plate and dome knobs were in perfect condition. The plate was nickel coated, while the knobs are chrome. I’m not building a relic, but these needed to be pretty badly damaged looking to match what I am up to (obviously something daft). The concoction I came up with to do this, was in all honesty, awful/pure evil, but has been soaked up and disposed of correctly, i.e. not down the sink. #cursedobjects #telecaster #disastercaster #relic #notarelic #guitar #guitartech #guitarbuilder #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother
