1964 Fender Jaguar, all original, all amazing. This is the first real vintage Jaguar I’ve had the pleasure of working on/holding/playing and I gotta say, it’s a huge treat. The neck is unlike anything I’ve felt in a modern Fender, and it’s like the neck that all necks should be based on. Starting 2018 off with a little bit of tweaking of one of my last jobs from 2017. Joe aka @teenslain was having some issues with his mij Jag, so we had it in for a setup, and shortly after it was out the door…and then back in. I don’t always get things right (I’m only hooman after all) and after seeing why this had come back in, I felt a little daft that I hadn’t noticed the problem straight away. The threads weren’t holding fast on the grub screws, nor the height adjustments for the bridge itself, so a whole bunch of sinking had gone on. Threadlocker to the rescue. After getting the setup sorted again and holding fast, all that was left was to work a decent groove in the saddle of the bass E string, as Joe was getting some slippage prior to the threads giving out. As mentioned, I don’t always nail it first time around. Mastery bridge install (and a little setup) complete on this MIM Jazzmaster for my bud and all ‘round legend @brendanoctattoo. Not a very tricky install but I did need to dowel the mounting holes and redrill for new post mounts. This guitar is playing so well, and I’ll admit I’m a little late to the @masterybridge world, but I gotta say, I’m a convert, particularly if real heavy playing is your thing. Yeah look, these are pretty awesome bridges. Just finished an install on a JM for one of the hardest strummers I know, and I’ve got complete faith that this will stand up to the job. Univox Hi-Flyer Phase 4. 1 of 2 Univox Hi-Flyer bass guitars I’ve had in the shop this week. This one no longer has the original pickups, and with the replacements being a mini humbucker size (and the original cavity being humungo) I had to make some pickup surrounds. A unique challenge with no template and only feint outlines from the original rings to go by. Finally completed the rebuild (with a couple of minor liberties taken) of this late 60’s Tokai Hummingbird, and oh dang it sounds aaaaaamazing. This job took on saga status with more than a few hurdles along the way, I’ll spare most of the details but let’s just say - ALWAYS make sure the pickups that are provided with a guitar in many parts that hasn’t been put together in years, actually fit under the strings before getting them rewound…thankfully the owner had just snagged some Teisco gold foils, so we took advantage of that and loaded them in (on?). The walls of the route for the trem was totally caved and falling apart to, so a bit of a structural rebuild was needed there. Wait sorry I’m going into more detail then expected, I’ll save it for another post. Fun setup job on this MIJ Fender Jaguar for @kelliewatchthestars She picked this one up from @tymguitars a few weeks ago and brought it down to get it setup for a heavier gauge string than it was previously set for. It’s now ready to roll, and possibly rock, in whichever order. Kellie btw, played a set with her group Screamfeeder many years ago at a Big Day Out festival, and it literally changed my life. I’d always loved music and was playing guitar well (but not well) before that, but I’d had no to little real experience with local bands at that point in my life, all ages shows were pretty few and far between and local stuff was even rarer, I think I was 14…anyways the set that they played close to the middle of the day in the sweltering heat, got me completely switched on to a whole new world of the local scene, and I never ever looked back. I think I started my first band 6 months later, much of that owing to the impact of that set.
