Here’s a particularly nice MIJ Mustang bass, that’s just had a setup and service, here @tymguitars It’s already spoken for, but I’ve had a good time with it while it’s been to stay. The very unique sound of these may not be to everyone’s taste, they can be a little “plunky”, but with the right setup and string gauges, they go pretty darn well! While there was a fair amount of work to do, everything in/on this bass did what it was meant to, to allow for a good setup. It may come as a surprise, but this is certainly not always the case…if you get an instrument back from me and I say “oh yeah, that’s a good one”, it probably means I didn’t have to move mountains to get it playing well. Last photo for the day of the amazing wall outside @tymguitars that keeps on getting guitars put in front of it…This Greco GO II, is making its way into the shop on consignment soon, and I had the pleasure of giving it a quick once over. This neck through, hard tail model, is bananas! It plays like it left the factory only days ago (hey, some guitars play well right from the factory…). So small it almost fits in your back pocket! I’ve just finished up repairs on this Coronet short scale bass, and with some flat wound strings, it’s so much fun to play! It needed a fair amount of attention to get the frets levelled out, the nail holes in the fretboard have been sorted out (see previous post from a couple of days back), and all the electronics cleaned up/solder reflowed. Ah, the old double nail in the fretboard for no apparent reason trick. When breaking this old Coronet short scale bass down to evaluate what needs doing (everything), I almost fully expected the nails to be driven into the neck pocket, strangely that’s not the case, and there’s no lifting or seam separation of the fretboard, so I’m totally stumped. Univox Hi-Flyer Phase 4. 1 of 2 Univox Hi-Flyer bass guitars I’ve had in the shop this week. This one no longer has the original pickups, and with the replacements being a mini humbucker size (and the original cavity being humungo) I had to make some pickup surrounds. A unique challenge with no template and only feint outlines from the original rings to go by. ‘77 Greco BM-900 “Red Special”. Recently, @tymguitars posted one of these he had tracked down (that’s now in the shop for sale), and shortly afterward we were contacted by the owner of this example, to get it wired up correctly. Initially I was a bit daunted by the prospect, as in all honesty I had no idea what the Red Special switching was all about. I was never a huge QUEEN tragic, and though I think Brian May is indeed an amazing talent, I had never looked into these all that deeply. Quickly though, it became apparent that it was not a nightmare job, with simple on/offs as pickup selections, and phase switching below. I would have loved to have made use of the original toggles but with 2 of 6 completely roached and for the sake of uniformity, I just rebuilt the whole thing. The guitar had already had a few modifications made along the way, the largest being that the middle pickup had been swapped for a cheap Strat ceramic, but as luck would have it, we had a Burns middle position pickup left over from a previous job, that I quickly snagged to load into this. Finally completed the rebuild (with a couple of minor liberties taken) of this late 60’s Tokai Hummingbird, and oh dang it sounds aaaaaamazing. This job took on saga status with more than a few hurdles along the way, I’ll spare most of the details but let’s just say - ALWAYS make sure the pickups that are provided with a guitar in many parts that hasn’t been put together in years, actually fit under the strings before getting them rewound…thankfully the owner had just snagged some Teisco gold foils, so we took advantage of that and loaded them in (on?). The walls of the route for the trem was totally caved and falling apart to, so a bit of a structural rebuild was needed there. Wait sorry I’m going into more detail then expected, I’ll save it for another post. Every morning this week before getting into the days work @tymguitars I’ve been spending about half an hour or more with this. It’s a cracking good 1969 Guyatone SG45 (ES175 Style) and it’s just a heck of a lot of fun to play. I’ve never really gotten into these gigantic style of guitars, they just sit kinda strange on me but this has certainly got me changing my tune (it does still sit super strange on me). There’s a little bit to do here I guess. Most/some of a ‘76 Ibanez just dropped into @tymguitars for, pretty much everything including stainless steel frets. I’ve been told it’s been sitting in it’s case like this for the better part of 10 years, and the neck has certainly decided to do it’s own thing in that time, so first things first (at least the way I want to go about it) is get a bridge and nut installed and get a better feel for how it’s going to play out.
