96-97’ Squier Musicmaster from the Vista series on the left, and (oops I forget exactly) mid-late 70’s Fender Musicmaster on the right. So so so very different in almost every way. I love you Squier, but I’ll take the Fender this time, hands down. #tymguitars #guitartech #awfulshorttermmemory #squier #fender #musicmaster #bass #guitar #repairshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Well, there was always going to be something I overlooked here…can’t believe y'all didn’t stop me 😉Basically, a pretty huge oversight was that I failed to take into consideration the fretboard radius (7.25) vs the bridge radius (12!!!) hahahaha… So, I had two options, remove some frets and sand in a compound radius, as it wasn’t too big a deal between 1st and 12th, which would be the responsible thing to do. OR - do the thing that I don’t recommend you out there ever do, and sand that compound radius right onto the frets. Why don’t I recommend it? Well, it’s fine if it’s your guitar, like this is mine, and thankfully these brand new frets were tall enough to take it, but it’s just, it’s pretty lazy, and not something a customer should ever expect. You also run a huge risk of taking off so much fret, that the whole thing becomes a bigger mess than it already was, so - don’t do it. In this instance though, I got lucky and it all worked out, and feels pretty darn okay. I got, very lucky. 🍀#custommistakes #crisisaverted #telecaster #shortscale #guitar #guitartech #ineedanadult #repair #rectify #cursedobjects #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother

Here’s a particularly nice MIJ Mustang bass, that’s just had a setup and service, here @tymguitars It’s already spoken for, but I’ve had a good time with it while it’s been to stay. The very unique sound of these may not be to everyone’s taste, they can be a little “plunky”, but with the right setup and string gauges, they go pretty darn well! While there was a fair amount of work to do, everything in/on this bass did what it was meant to, to allow for a good setup. It may come as a surprise, but this is certainly not always the case…if you get an instrument back from me and I say “oh yeah, that’s a good one”, it probably means I didn’t have to move mountains to get it playing well. Stay rad out there, and as always, be excellent to each other. #tymguitars #guitartech #fender #bass #mustang #madeinjapan #guitar #repairshop #winnlane #fortitudevalley #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Orange is young, full of daring… Oh boy, working on this Fender Super-sonic, has been a mixed bag for me. I’ve wanted one of these (well the Squier model) since they first appeared in the mid/late 90’s and, well, this is the first time I’ve been able to try one, and damnit it’s a bit of an awkward little thing. PERSONAL OPINION AHEAD - I’m not totally bagging out the guitar, it does sound great, and has plenty going for it, but for me, there’s just so much going on here that makes it more of a pain to play, than anything else. The balance of the guitar is completely shot. It hangs from the strap as though it WANTS to fall towards the floor face down, which is probably my biggest issue here. It also makes it very difficult to chord, or really index where you are on the neck because it just feels wrong hanging like that. On top of that, given the upside downsies body, with the toggle, on I guess the upper horn, you have only a tiny amount of strumming space between it, and the bridge, so it feels really hard to dig into chords with any gusto. I just felt really cramped up. Maybe it’s just me? These are still one of my fave daft guitars, and with some simple mods, a lot of the problems could be ironed out, but I don’t think I’ll be rushing out to grab one. That finish though, hells yeah! #fender #supersonic #guitartech #guitars #guitarepair #tymguitars #guitar #repairshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #winnlane #personalopinionsorryguys #beexcellenttoeachother

A 1970’s Guild T50 just came into the shop on consignment, the original bridge comes with it too! I just gave it a once over, and some new strings, and it’s good to go. Super tidy condition, so clean in fact that I had to check the date again…and again! #tymguitars #guild #guitar #guitartech #vintageguitar #vintage #guitars #guitarshop #repairshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Toys! I mean, tools. It’s been a little while since my last refret and I forgot I didn’t have a flat back base for my hand press (for when you reach the tail end of a neck). Thankfully I remembered we have this bad ass press hanging out the back of the shop. Done, not yet dusted. #tymguitars #guitarepair #guitartech #fretpress #fender #jaguar #mij #repairshop #guitar #toolsofthetrade #winnlane #fortitudevalley #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

This late 70’s/early 80’s Maton JB6 came in for some tlc recently, and heck it’s been a blast having it here. You don’t see too many of these getting around with supposedly only 315 having been made between 1977-84, so I’m really glad to have had some time with it. #tymguitars #guitartech #maton #matonguitars #australianmade #guitar #guitarrepair #australiansassafras #repairshop #guitarshop #fortitudevalley #thevalley #winnlane #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Proudly (and happily) a PLEK free workshop. I get it, machines are great at doing things, zero tolerance and blah blah blah, but really honestly, I’d hate to live in a world where machines do everything. I’m not anti tech, I LOVE tech, but I’m not for having machines doing jobs that people do with care, love, and skill. I think I would go bananas if the job that I love, suddenly turned into me pushing buttons and making sure a machine was doing the things correctly, it sounds like a nightmare. On a large factory scale, I can to some degree understand why a PLEK is used, I don’t agree with it, just like I don’t totally agree with CNC bodies and necks being churned out, but I understand it. In a repair shop setting (which I’m seeing more and more of, hence my Luddite tinged ramblings), nope, I don’t want anything to do with it. I’d be real sad if this is the way the “industry” as a whole is heading, which I don’t see happening…I’m just sayin’. #guitarrepair #guitartech #tymguitars #fretleveling #byhand #fender #jazzbass #guitar #repairshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #supportindependent #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

1964 Fender Jaguar, all original, all amazing. This is the first real vintage Jaguar I’ve had the pleasure of working on/holding/playing and I gotta say, it’s a huge treat. The neck is unlike anything I’ve felt in a modern Fender, and it’s like the neck that all necks should be based on. I’m seriously having a hard time calling the owner to let him know it’s ready…it’s so unbelievably good. #tymguitars #fender #fenderjaguar #vintageguitar #precbs #offsetguitars #jaguar #guitartech #repairshop #fortitudevalley #winnlane #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)
