Orange is young, full of daring… Oh boy, working on this Fender Super-sonic, has been a mixed bag for me. I’ve wanted one of these (well the Squier model) since they first appeared in the mid/late 90’s and, well, this is the first time I’ve been able to try one, and damnit it’s a bit of an awkward little thing. PERSONAL OPINION AHEAD - I’m not totally bagging out the guitar, it does sound great, and has plenty going for it, but for me, there’s just so much going on here that makes it more of a pain to play, than anything else. The balance of the guitar is completely shot. It hangs from the strap as though it WANTS to fall towards the floor face down, which is probably my biggest issue here. It also makes it very difficult to chord, or really index where you are on the neck because it just feels wrong hanging like that. On top of that, given the upside downsies body, with the toggle, on I guess the upper horn, you have only a tiny amount of strumming space between it, and the bridge, so it feels really hard to dig into chords with any gusto. I just felt really cramped up. Maybe it’s just me? These are still one of my fave daft guitars, and with some simple mods, a lot of the problems could be ironed out, but I don’t think I’ll be rushing out to grab one. Rebuild complete! Far out, I think it’s just under a year ago that this Charlie Christian style pickup, completely fell apart as I was about to install it. I was majorly bummed out, first the top plate just snapped in half, soon followed by the rest of the pickup just crumbling to bits, even the magnets fell off! @leddinvintageguitars took the rebuild job on a while back and he did an immaculate job of it, it’s essentially been built from scratch. All that was left for me to do, was build a new top plate, which I’d been putting off for a long time. Today was the day, annnnnd it actually went a lot smoother than expected! I made a template out of some clear guard material by first cutting a slot down the centre for the blade, and then with a combination of eyeballing and every now and then measuring, came pretty damn close to the standard design. Rainy day off shenanigans with what was an Ibanez RG140 (‘87 Korean factory). Yet another of my previously on hold projects, I picked this up in its original and completely broken condition from a pawn shop, ages ago with no idea what I wanted to do with it. A good hunt through the parts drawer recently, and a rather daft/excellent experiment is underway with a P90 and a mini humbucker, and a raft of other modifications… For years it’s been one of my favourite things, to take what’s basically landfill and turn it into something completely unique and fun to play. These experiments are not meant to be “perfect” but as long as it plays damn well, sounds great, and helps someone write some jams, my job is done. Just finished up the week @tymguitars by addressing some issues with this Peavey T60. The neck has some pretty unforgiving humps and bumps, plus a slight twist so levelling the frets was done one small pass at a time, then checking to see where to go from there. The frets were also getting pretty flat so it was a painstakingly slow job to get through, but after many actual hours of tweaking the truss along with fret dressing, I’m happy with how it turned out. Heavy beasts that’s for sure!
