Well, there was always going to be something I overlooked here…can’t believe y'all didn’t stop me 😉Basically, a pretty huge oversight was that I failed to take into consideration the fretboard radius (7.25) vs the bridge radius (12!!!) hahahaha… So, I had two options, remove some frets and sand in a compound radius, as it wasn’t too big a deal between 1st and 12th, which would be the responsible thing to do. OR - do the thing that I don’t recommend you out there ever do, and sand that compound radius right onto the frets. Why don’t I recommend it? Well, it’s fine if it’s your guitar, like this is mine, and thankfully these brand new frets were tall enough to take it, but it’s just, it’s pretty lazy, and not something a customer should ever expect. You also run a huge risk of taking off so much fret, that the whole thing becomes a bigger mess than it already was, so - don’t do it. In this instance though, I got lucky and it all worked out, and feels pretty darn okay. I got, very lucky. 🍀#custommistakes #crisisaverted #telecaster #shortscale #guitar #guitartech #ineedanadult #repair #rectify #cursedobjects #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother

WVMIP - work very much in progress. Around about 800 lines to go, then some texture/grit. It’s been A LONG time since I’ve really done any gig posters, or any serious attempt at drawing (analogue or digital)…but with so many rad in store gigs @tymguitars coming up, and after doing a few graphic collage based flyers, I’ve felt the urge to get back into it a little more. Gig posters used to be my world, I’d follow the work of @jermainerogersart, @frankkozik, @taramcpherson, and so many other talented artists, religiously. I never got to a point where I was super stoked with my own work, certainly not by comparison to the greats, but I remember an amazingly welcoming and helpful community that I was really happy to be a part of. This is my first attempt at using a combination of hand drawing and the tracing in illustrator with a Wacom tablet, huge learning curve, but I think after the next 800 or so lines I’ll be feeling more capable…maybe. #wip #gigposter #wacom #drawing #sketch #rough #draft #adobeillustrator #adobephotoshop #mightturnoutokay #failureisalwaysanoption #brisbane #cursedobjects #beexcellenttoeachother

Thank goodness for test runs, right?!! Ahahahaha. I’ve been seeing some AMAZING gold leaf finishes lately, and I just had to have a go. Well…I mean I’m going to have a go, this was just a run to try a few different methods. This is the result of the crumple and burnish, with egg white as the size (glue). Obviously very messy, but damn good fun. I’ve had a go at a clean less sketchy run on the back of the body and I’m starting to get a feel for it. A few more attempts on test bodies first, then something incredibly daft for, a Jazzmaster perhaps? #failureisalwaysanoption #experiment #telecaster #goldleaf #guitarfinishing #guitar #brisbane #cursedobjects #beexcellenttoeachother

Another one down from the “I ran out of time to repair all these guitars I bought years ago but now my cupboards are literally too full and I should probs get around to it” collection. Yep, that’s how I’ll list it for sale too. Originally this Epiphone Goth SG was bought with a broken headstock (full snap in the usual location) to salvage a set of EMG pickups that had been loaded into it, for another job I had on. I repaired the headstock AGES ago, but got way too thinky as to what I actually wanted to do with it past that point, that I couldn’t think of anything and hid it away without ever having strung it up. Fast forward to now and it’s a surprisingly rad and stupid light approximation of an SG. It’s loaded with, I HAVE NO IDEA I JUST GRABBED WHAT I SAW FIRST, and I’ve been having a good time with it in the shop. For sale, I guess? I dunno I kinda want this one to go to a kid who can’t really afford a guitar, if you know one, get in touch. #cursedobjects #tymguitars #guitarrepair #guitartech #epiphone #sg #mostlysolidguitar #guitar #guitarist #blackandgold #andchrome #andotherstuff #repairshop #guitarshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #supportyourlocal #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Rainy day off shenanigans with what was an Ibanez RG140 (‘87 Korean factory). Yet another of my previously on hold projects, I picked this up in its original and completely broken condition from a pawn shop, ages ago with no idea what I wanted to do with it. A good hunt through the parts drawer recently, and a rather daft/excellent experiment is underway with a P90 and a mini humbucker, and a raft of other modifications… For years it’s been one of my favourite things, to take what’s basically landfill and turn it into something completely unique and fun to play. These experiments are not meant to be “perfect” but as long as it plays damn well, sounds great, and helps someone write some jams, my job is done. I’ll let you know how it turns out! #guitartech #guitarepair #customguitar #justforfun #ibanez #guitar #tymguitars #repairshop #guitarshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #cursedobjects #experiment #wip #beexcellenttoeachother

I’ve had a super rare quiet week @tymguitars this week, so I’ve been digging up and repairing a bunch of guitars that I’d put aside over a year ago, for times exactly like this. More details on this Fernandes in my last post…also more 80’s and early 90’s treasures to come when I next have some time…one very cool Aria Pro II RS should be getting some love soon. #brisbane #guitartech #guitarrepair #fernandes #fernandesguitars #shred #guitar #tymguitars #repairshop #guitarshop #cursedobjects #beexcellenttoeachother

Getting reacquainted. This is the first guitar I gave a “made to fade” char finish, which feels like a lifetime ago! It’s actually a Squier body that I stripped, with a ‘52 reissue neck, and a set of Twisted Tele pickups (my favourite #fender set). It’s made to fade, but I’ve hardly had the time to play this thing anywhere near enough so I’d say it’s time to remedy that. #telecaster #madetofade #squier #tele #guitar #guitartech #guitarist #char #yakisugi #customguitar #cursedobjects #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother

Humungo thanks to Rick @vertigo_instruments (who is our off site amp tech @tymguitars) for getting this daft amp that I refuse to believe is not one of the greatest amps ever, into amazing condition. Sounds better than ever, and now with a fully functional and useful EQ!!! #marshallamps #guitar #gibson #gibsonsg #guitarist #tymguitars #brisbane #repairshop #supportindependent #cursedobjects #beexcellenttoeachother

It’s my day off but I think it’s high time that I finished this build. This one was started around the same time as the other mahogany body that ended up being the tripleninety. I was just REALLY picky about the Tru Oil finish and had a few setbacks/runs that I wasn’t happy with…it’s now been on the shelf for long enough. I’m going to limit myself to one last coat, after roughing it up just enough to get a good adhesion. Everything else is in place apart from a set of pickups that I do believe will need to be something special - @leddinvintageguitars I’m looking your way. #customguitar #mahogany #guitar #guitartech #guitarbuilding #woodworking #strat #guitars #truoil #custom #cursedobjects #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother
