96-97’ Squier Musicmaster from the Vista series on the left, and (oops I forget exactly) mid-late 70’s Fender Musicmaster on the right. So so so very different in almost every way. I love you Squier, but I’ll take the Fender this time, hands down. #tymguitars #guitartech #awfulshorttermmemory #squier #fender #musicmaster #bass #guitar #repairshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Here’s a particularly nice MIJ Mustang bass, that’s just had a setup and service, here @tymguitars It’s already spoken for, but I’ve had a good time with it while it’s been to stay. The very unique sound of these may not be to everyone’s taste, they can be a little “plunky”, but with the right setup and string gauges, they go pretty darn well! While there was a fair amount of work to do, everything in/on this bass did what it was meant to, to allow for a good setup. It may come as a surprise, but this is certainly not always the case…if you get an instrument back from me and I say “oh yeah, that’s a good one”, it probably means I didn’t have to move mountains to get it playing well. Stay rad out there, and as always, be excellent to each other. #tymguitars #guitartech #fender #bass #mustang #madeinjapan #guitar #repairshop #winnlane #fortitudevalley #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

So small it almost fits in your back pocket! I’ve just finished up repairs on this Coronet short scale bass, and with some flat wound strings, it’s so much fun to play! It needed a fair amount of attention to get the frets levelled out, the nail holes in the fretboard have been sorted out (see previous post from a couple of days back), and all the electronics cleaned up/solder reflowed. My understanding is that this is off to a young lady, about 9 years old, to learn how to play, and I think it’ll make a wonderful companion for years to come. #tymguitars #guitartech #guitarrepair #vintage #shortscale #bass #coronet #madeinjapan #guitar #vintageguitar #repairshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

That was one sticky icky ricky! WAS… Owned by a chap who lives in Cairns (where the humidity is pretty much 300% all year ‘round), this 2001 “4003” Rickenbacker, came in for a service this week, and for real, the finish ain’t happy with the heat/humidity, it was so soft. Work done included a minor fret level and setup, plus very careful cleaning! Strongly advising a dehumidifier be bought for the case too ✌️#tymguitars #guitartech #rickenbacker #bass #repairshop #fortitudevalley #brisbane #guitar #humiditykills #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Ah, the old double nail in the fretboard for no apparent reason trick. When breaking this old Coronet short scale bass down to evaluate what needs doing (everything), I almost fully expected the nails to be driven into the neck pocket, strangely that’s not the case, and there’s no lifting or seam separation of the fretboard, so I’m totally stumped. Anyways, should be a fun little bass, once it’s all back together! #tymguitars #guitartech #guitarrepair #repairshop #vintagebass #madeinjapan #shortscale #bass #fortitudevalley #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

1 of 2 Univox Hi-Flyer bass guitars I’ve had in the shop this week. This one no longer has the original pickups, and with the replacements being a mini humbucker size (and the original cavity being humungo) I had to make some pickup surrounds. A unique challenge with no template and only feint outlines from the original rings to go by. These play awesomely by the way, so light but with barely any neck dive! #tymguitars #guitartech #guitarrepair #univox #bass #madeinjapan #vintageguitar #offsetguitars #repairshop #guitarshop #thevalley #brisbane #guitar #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Quick little nut repair for this #rickenbacker Actually the first time I’ve had one of these bass guitars in my hands! So rad. #guitartech #guitarrepair #repairshop #tymguitars #bass #brisbane #beexcellenttoeachother (at Tym Guitars)

Look, maybe I’m exaggerating but slotting nuts for bass guitars with a zero fret is pretty much the same as running a marathon. Fresh strings going on this #yamaha #flyingbanana tomorrow, and then I’ll try not to play it because I’m already very, very into it. #bassguitar #bass #luthier #guitarrepair #vintagebass #vintageguitar #sb1c #guitartech #brisbane

How thick is the factory polyurethane finish on a Squier VM Jaguar SS Bass guitar you ask very specifically? Well, I’ve just started stripping one to do a custom finish, so now you know - 1mm.

I’m not getting into the debate about tonewoods (ever hopefully), but how about tone paint mwahahahaha.
